A large informative test of the discrete video card Intel Iris Xe (DG1) from Asus has appeared on the Web. Many reviews of this adapter previously could not boast of a large number of competitors for comparison – in the new one there is no such problem, although some Tiger Lake mobile processor with a similar iGPU is still missing.

In this case, the source tested the games in two resolutions and modes: 720p with low graphics quality settings and 1080p with medium ones.

As you can see, in the first case, the Intel graphics card produces on average more than 60 fps, that is, it easily copes with modern games with a large margin. In the second, the performance drops by more than half, but 29 fps was also enough for a completely comfortable game. It would be, because this is an average result, and here it is very important to look in more detail.

For starters, it’s worth saying that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla didn’t launch at all. But there are also a number of games where the performance is noticeably below 25 fps, that is, it simply won’t work. This includes Cyberpunk 2077, Borderlands 3, Dirt 5, The Division 2, Microsoft Flight Simulatior, Horizon Zero Dawn, Metro Exodus, and Watch Dog Legion. That is, out of 17 games, 8 will not be able to play due to low performance, one more did not start at all, and two more are on the verge of playability. Those average 29fps were mainly due to a few games where the performance was very high.
As a result, we can state that Intel Iris Xe is generally not suitable for modern games in Full HD at medium graphics quality settings, and it is not a fact that it is suitable at low ones. But at 720p at low settings, the performance is enough even for Cyberpunk 2077, albeit close-up.
As for the comparison with other GPUs and iGPUs, Intel’s discrete graphics card, having mobile roots, competes just with the integrated graphics processors of mobile APUs and the old GeForce GT 1030. Even the core of the desktop Ryzen 7 5700G is significantly more productive, not to mention the GeForce GTX 1050.
