“Masters of the Air” debuts on Apple TV+ this Friday (26) and tells the story of the 100th Bomb Group of the United States Eighth Air Force during the attacks on Hitler's Germany in World War II.
The series, produced by Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg, is the younger sister of other productions about the Second World War, such as “The Pacific” and “Brothers of War”, which were also made by the trio.
For those who like films and series of this genre, the CNN prepared a list of nine productions about the Second World War, starting with “Masters of the Air”, which features Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan in the cast.

“Masters of the Air”
“Masters of the Air” is a series based on the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller, adapted by John Orloff and tells the true story of the 100th Bomb Group of the United States during the attacks on Hitler's Germany.
The production, which features Austin Butler in the cast, shows with a magnifying glass the saga of North American soldiers who face the cold, lack of oxygen, high temperatures and the considerable altitudes at which military planes flew in World War II.
A CNN , the cast talked about the importance of producing audiovisual content about the Second World War at a time when humanity is experiencing two wars: Israel's war against the radical Islamic group Hamas; and of Russia against Ukraine.
Gary Goetzman, executive producer of “Benders of the Air,” also spoke to CNN about what it was like portraying Nazi horrors in the series.
“Oppenheimer”
The film “Oppenheimer”, by Christopher Nolan, tells the story of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer as he works with a team of scientists during the Manhattan Project, responsible for creating the atomic bomb.
Starring Cilian Murphy, the cast also includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and Robert Downey Jr.
The film was the most nominated for this year's Oscar and will compete for 13 awards at the ceremony that will take place on March 14. “Oppenheimer” is available on rental platforms.
“War brothers”
“Brothers of War” is another production by the trio Goetzman, Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The 10-chapter series was launched in 2001 and tells the story of Easy Company, a battalion of the United States parachute regiment during the fighting of World War II in Europe.
Not only the fighting against Nazi Germany appears, but also against Japan and the end of the war in 1945.
The series is based on a book of the same name by Stephen E. Ambrose, published in 1992, and features David Schwimmer, from “Friends”, Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston in the cast.
“Brothers of War was nominated for 19 awards at the Emmy Awards and won six of them, including Best Miniseries. The series is available on HBO Max, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
“The Pacific”
The middle sister of “Brothers of War” and “Masters of the Air” is “The Pacific”, from 2010. The series was also produced by the trio that made the other two and was inspired by a book of the same name, by Hugh Ambrose, son by the author of “Brothers of War”, published in 2009.
This time, the story told is of the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, especially the clashes against Japan.
The cast includes James Badge Dale, Ashton Holmes and Josh Helman. The series also won the Emmy Awards for Best Miniseries and is available on Netflix, HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video.
“Dunkirk”
“Dunkirk” is another Christopher Nolan film about World War II. Released in 2017, the film shows Operation Dynamo, in which the United Kingdom aimed to rescue 400,000 Allied soldiers who were surrounded by Nazi Germany on the beaches of Dunkirk, in northern France.
The film earned Nolan his first Oscar nomination for Best Director and appeared in seven other categories. “Dunkirk” left the awards with three statuettes: Best Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Editing.
The cast of the film included Cilian Murphy, who stars in “Oppenheimer”, Harry Styles, and Barry Keoghan, from “Saltburn” and “Masters of the Air”. “Dunkirk” is available on Amazon Prime Video and HBO Max.
“Pearl Harbor”
Directed by Michael Bay, from “Bad Boys”, “Transformers” and “Armageddon”, “Pearl Harbor” was released in 2001, on Memorial Day, the day when Americans pay tribute to soldiers who die fighting for the country.
The film tells a fictional narrative about the Japanese attack on the Pearl Harbor base in the United States, which led to the formal entry of the Americans into the Second World War. The film received strong criticism for the poetic license taken in not accurately displaying historical facts.
Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Alex Baldwin are in the cast. “Pearl Harbor” can be seen on Starplus.
“The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”
“The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” is directed by Mark Herman, from “A Couch for Two”, and tells the story of a German boy who befriends a Jewish boy who lived in a concentration camp during the Third Reich.
Starring Asa Butterfield, from “Hugo” and “Sex Education”, the film was criticized for softening the horrors of Nazism, as there is historical evidence that the Germans sent children to the gas chambers for not being able to work.
The film also features Vera Farmiga, from “A Orfã”, “The Departed” and “Bates Motel”, in the cast and is available on Netflix and Globoplay.
“Inglourious Basterds”
Directed by Quentin Tarantido, “Inglourious Basterds” tells the story of two parallel plans to kill important leaders of Nazi Germany. One of them is planned by a young French Jewish woman who owns a cinema and the other by a group of allied Jewish soldiers.
The film is narrated by Samuel L. Jackson and has a strong cast, with names such as Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, Michael Fassbender, Julie Dreyfus and Mélanie Laurent.
“Inglourious Basterds” was released in 2009 and is available on Netflix and Starplus.
“The Man in the High Castle”
The series “The Man in the High Castle”, on Amazon Prime Video, was produced by Ridley Scott, from “Alien”, “Gladiator”, “Thelma and Louise” and “Blade Runner”.
Released in 2015, it was based on the book of the same name by writer Philip K. Dick, published in 1962, and portrays a dystopian reality in which Hitler's Germany and the Empire of Japan won the war. The two countries divided the United States into the Greater Nazi Reich to the east and the Japanese Pacific States to the west.
The cast includes Alexa Davalos, Rupert Evans and Luke Kleintank. “The Man in the High Castle” has 40 episodes divided into four seasons and can be watched on Amazon Prime Video.
