Brady Corbet 36, director of “The Brutalist ” defended the performances of Adrien Brody 51, and Felicity Jones 41, after the film was criticized for using technology artificial intelligence .
The film’s editor, Dávid Jancsó told how the filmmakers used tools from the Ukrainian company Respeecher to adjust the two stars’ Hungarian dialogue in order to make it more authentic, which generated a negative reaction.
However, the director explained that the “innovative” technology was used carefully in post-production just to “refine” sounds with precision . Brady told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement: “Adrien and Felicity’s performances are completely their own.
They worked for months with the dialect coach Tanera Marshall to perfect accents. Respeecher’s innovative technology was only used in editing the Hungarian dialogue, specifically to refine certain vowels and letters precisely.
No English dialogue has been changed . This was a manual process, done by our sound team and Respeecher in post-production. The objective was to preserve the authenticity of Adrien and Felicity’s performances in another language not replacing or altering them, and it was done with the greatest respect for the craft.”
Dávid had praised Adrien and Felicity’s performances, but explained that minor changes were needed to enhance specific Hungarian sounds so that they would sound accurate to native speakers. His own voice was used as a model for the system, and both actors recorded their own voices for the AI.
He explained in an interview with Red Shark: “I’m a native speaker of Hungarian and I know it’s one of the hardest languages to learn to pronounce. If you come from the Anglo-Saxon world, certain sounds can be particularly difficult to understand. Faced with tight financial constraints, the film’s total budget was less than $10 million, we were very careful to maintain their performances. It’s mostly just replacing letters here and there,” he explained.
“You could do it in ProTools, but we had so much dialogue in Hungarian that we really needed to speed up the process, otherwise we would still be in post-production.”
The editor also revealed that the Generative AI was used in a sequence at the end of the film as part of the inspiration for a series of architectural drawings and finished buildings created by Adrien’s character Laszlo Toth, although the designs themselves were hand-drawn .
But Dávid doesn’t think there should be any controversy regarding the use of technology. “It’s controversial in the industry to talk about AI, but it shouldn’t be. We should have a very open discussion about what tools AI can offer us.
There’s nothing in the film using AI that hasn’t been done before . It just makes the process much faster. We used AI to create these little details that we didn’t have the money or time to film. [A designer de produção] Judy Becker and her team did not use AI to create or render any of the buildings.
All images were hand-drawn by the artists. To clarify, in the memorial video shown in the background of one scene, our editorial team created images intentionally designed to look like poor digital renderings typical of the 1980s.”
In Brazil, “The Brutalist” hits theaters in February 2 .
