The director of “Harry Potter” Chris Columbus, 66, is happy that the remake of the saga, which will be a HBO series, will not face the same “restrictions” as the original films . The filmmaker, who was responsible for directing “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” (2001) and “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” (2002), spoke about the challenges he faced when trying to “put as much of the book as possible” into the productions.
“I think that [a série da HBO] It’s a spectacular idea, because there’s a certain restriction when you’re making a film. Our first film was two hours and 40 minutes, and the second was almost the same length,” he told People magazine.
Each season of the upcoming reboot, with production expected to begin soon, will focus on one of JK Rowling’s books, which gives producers more freedom.
“The fact that they have the freedom to [vários] episodes for each book… I think that’s fantastic. You can put all the things in the show that we didn’t get to do… all these great scenes that we just couldn’t get into the movies.”
Chris, who also directed the 1990 film Home Alone, insisted he is excited to see what the team does with the same source material.
Casting for the series is underway, and fans are waiting to find out who will take on the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Albus Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort.
Columbus previously revealed how his casting for the original films was influenced by his experiences working with Macaulay Culkin while the actor was still a child.
Speaking on Demi Lovato’s documentary “Child Star,” he said: “We went from filming Home Alone, which nobody cared about, to in the course of a year, Macaulay Culkin becoming a huge star, and that was unexpected. . It’s not like ‘Harry Potter’ where you know you can be extraordinarily successful… I come from a working-class family, and I’ve seen that a few times with kids, who come from a humble family and suddenly become the family providers.”
He realized that, from the beginning, his casting for Harry Potter was capturing the entire world’s imagination.
“You go out on the street, you go into a bar, you go anywhere, and people are saying, ‘Who are you going to cast? Who will be Harry Potter? You take that information and you take it back to the actor and their parents, and you say, ‘This is going to be pretty intense.’”
Chris “felt a huge responsibility” to ensure that any child cast in Harry Potter “knew what they were getting into,” especially as he saw how Culkin, who has since spoken out about his troubled family life, including his “abusive” father, suffered from fame.
“I suddenly realized that parents had to be an important part of this. I can’t leave [um ator] going back to a really unstable environment because of a movie. It’s not worth it. It was as important to cast the parents as the children,” he concluded.
