Dinosaurs and Superheroes Return to Screens to Boost Box Offices

the star Tom Cruise is getting ready for the red carpet in cannestickets for the next Marvel movie are selling like crazy and a new dinosaur adventure is on the way to grab a piece of the summer theatrical release season.

The season is a sign of hope for theater operators, who are hoping the industry is finally getting back to normal after the impact of the Covid-19.

“We clearly have reason to be optimistic,” Cineworld executive director Mooky Greidinger said in an interview, noting titles like “Jurassic World: Dominion” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

Cineworld, AMC Entertainment and other theater operators have been devastated by the Covid-19 pandemic, and are still struggling to get the industry back to the level it was a few years ago.

Some big-budget sequels will need to work hard this summer in Hollywood, as the industry is releasing fewer movies than in other years in the summer season, the biggest for moviegoers.

“This is really a summer of rebuilding,” said Jeff Bock, senior media analyst at Exhibitor Relations Co. “Involving sequels, superheroes, and dinosaurs.”

Bock expects studios to release 40% fewer movies than in the pre-pandemic summer of 2019, when 48 movies hit screens from May to early September. This year, the same period will have 29 general releases.
