Argentine paleontologists have discovered the remains of a gigantic new species of long-necked herbivorous dinosaur in the Patagonian region, claiming the animal is one of the largest ever found.
The discovery in the Pueblo Blanco Nature Reserve, presented on Thursday, was made by scientists for the first time in 2018. The dinosaur bones were so large that they caused the van taking them to a laboratory in Buenos Aires to overturn, but no one was injured and the remains were left intact.
Paleontologist Nicolás Chimento said that scientists decided to name the dinosaur “Chucarosaurus Diripienda”, which means boiled and stirred, because it rolled over and survived the crash.
At 50 tons and 30 meters long, Chucarosaurus is the largest dinosaur ever discovered in the mountainous province of Rio Negro. The animal would have lived in the Upper Cretaceous period alongside predators, fish and sea turtles.
The femur bone from Chucarosaurus, which measures 1.90 meters (6 feet) in length, was split into three pieces, each weighing more than 100 kilograms and requiring at least three people to lift it, the scientists said.
Patagonia was home to the world’s largest plant-eating dinosaurs, such as the colossal Patagotitan mayorum, the largest dinosaur ever discovered, although scientists still don’t know why the species grew so fast and, in some cases, never stopped growing throughout their lives. lives.
