In China, about 140 million people use the digital yuan wallet (eCNY), and the volume of transactions with the state cryptocurrency has reached 62 billion yuan (about $ 9.7 billion).
This was announced by a senior official from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC). However, chairman of the Central Bank’s Digital Currency Research Institute, Mu Changchun, noted that an official launch date for eCNY has not yet been announced.
More than 1.55 million merchants in the country can now accept payments using the digital yuan wallet, including utility providers, food service providers, transportation, retail and government services, Mu said.
As a reminder, 35 Chinese banks added support for eCNY in August. In addition, the NBK said it will test the state-owned cryptocurrency during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
