Depression increases accident rates in drivers over 65 years, according to research

Compared to younger drivers (aged 25-64 years), older drivers are more likely to cause an accident, while depression is burdened by the driving behavior of the elderly. These were some of the main conclusions of a study published in the Jama Network Open medical journal. It is estimated that 25% of all drivers will be over 65 years old by 2050, while older drivers prefer to move with a personal vehicle even when options are available. The increased risk of accident has been attributed to different factors, including the side effects of the medication they receive, to causes related to dementia or some form of depression. The latter is responsible for reducing the reaction time and distraction.
