Denilson announces agreement with Belo, ending process of more than 20 years

The sports commentator and former player Denilson announced, this Friday (11), that he reached a friendly agreement with the singer Belo, thus putting an end to a legal battle that lasted for 20 years. He did not reveal the terms of the agreement.

On his Twitter, the former player stated that his disagreements with Belo were not personal, but only legal.

“Singer Belo and I talked and, amicably, we reached an agreement. It is extremely important to emphasize to everyone that our disagreements were never personal, on the contrary, they were – and therefore no longer are – in the legal field. As men, adults and professionals that we are, it was important to put an end to this imbroglio that had kept us apart for over 20 years. Today, with joy, we close this matter, ”he wrote.

Denilson also posted a video on his YouTube channel about the deal. In it, the commentator reinforced that the conversations were friendly and said that he had to give up some things.

“Fortunately, in the last few days, talking to all parties, including Belo, after many years without speaking to Belo, we spoke by phone. It is noteworthy that it was a very quiet conversation, very friendly. Belo was ready there too to resolve the situation”, revealed the former player.

“Obviously, I gave up every possibility that could happen. We reach an agreement and we call it off,” she added.

After the announcement, Denilson poked those who took advantage of the case to make fun.

“For many it was a joke, a meme, but those who were there on a daily basis knew that it was something that bothered me, something that was exhausting, not only for me, but I imagine that for Belo as well. Now, it’s time to wish Belo success, that he continues to shine, bringing his good music to people”, he emphasized.

Despite the nudge, the commentator ended the video making a joke about the end of the process.

“You know my passion for pagode, that will not change, I will continue to be passionate about this segment. And now I will be able to post my little videos enjoying Belo”, he concluded.

According to the portal “UOL”, the debt between the two originated in 1999, when the then player bought the rights to the pagode band Soweto, of which Belo was the lead singer, for approximately R$ 1 million.

In 2000, the singer left the group to pursue a solo career and Denilson filed a lawsuit, claiming breach of contract. In 2004, Justice gave victory to Denilson and condemned Belo to pay R$ 388 thousand at the time.

The singer, in turn, never recognized the commentator as the owner of the Soweto rights and therefore never paid off the debt. With the addition of monetary corrections, the value exceeds R$ 7 million.

In 2017, to guarantee the payment of the debt, Denilson filed a lawsuit in the Justice of São Paulo and won the blocking and attachment of the fee of a show that Belo would receive to reduce the debt, which at the time was R$ 4.7 million, according to “UOL”.

Other values ​​pledged by the former player were payments that Belo received from some television stations. In the same year, Belo tried to reverse the scenario and filed a claim for compensation for moral damages against Denilson. According to the newspaper “Extra”, in the action, the singer claimed that he felt “humiliated, embarrassed and uncomfortable” with a charge made by the former player on a social network.

On the occasion, the pagodeiro Thiaguinho made a publication in honor of the singer, and Denilson commented: “All that remains is to learn how to pay who he owes”. The claim for compensation was denied.

Four years later, in 2021, Justice determined that the companies responsible for organizing and distributing tickets for Belo concerts should pass on the amount in court for debt relief, according to information from “UOL”.

In 2023, according to the portal, Ticket 360, responsible for tickets for a show that the singer would do in São Paulo, told the court that it did not transfer about R$ 280,000, as Belo would have asked for advance payment. The company accused the singer of circumventing the judicial system in order not to have the amount pledged.

Another request for attachment occurred when Belo participated in the segment “Dança dos Famosos”, on TV Globo. Judge Carlo Mazza Britto Melfi, from the 5th Civil Court of the District of São Bernardo do Campo of the Court of Justice of the State of São Paulo (TJSP), accepted Denilson’s request and all the amount destined to the singer in the program was transferred to the abatement of the debt.

“The survey in favor of the author is hereby deferred [Denilson]. New delaying manifestations may give rise to the application of the penalty for the act that violates the dignity of Justice. The appointment of an accountant to prepare the calculations will be made after the fulfillment of the above determined”, says the court decision.
