In an interview with CNN This Tuesday (5), the director of the Butantan Institute, Esper Kallás, stated that the number of doses of the dengue vaccine sent by the Ministry of Health to the state of São Paulo is low to meet the demand of the São Paulo population.
According to Kallás, around 70,000 doses of the Qdenga vaccine were allocated to the state. “Is very little. We are 44 million people,” he commented.
“The Ministry of Health has a distribution policy based on the number of cases. The number of doses announced by the ministry is relatively small given the country's needs and, therefore, for example, the state of São Paulo will only receive, in the latest news that We had 70 thousand doses in this first wave that is arriving and, therefore, we do not imagine that it will have an impact on the number of cases”, he stated.
The Qdenga vaccine, which is used by the Unified Health System (SUS), has an application interval of three months between the first and second application. In Kallás' assessment, this is a difference with the vaccine being developed by Butantan, which is a single dose.
According to Kallás, Butantan is working to obtain approval for the vaccine from the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa).
“We will complete the submission to Anvisa in the second half of this year and, all going well, we should start making the vaccine available for use only after the normal regulatory approval processes, which is estimated to only happen in 2025”, he explained.
A CNN He contacted the Ministry of Health to obtain a position, but there has still been no response.
Emergency situation in São Paulo
The São Paulo government declared an emergency situation due to dengue this Tuesday. The decision was taken after the state surpassed 300 probable cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which constitutes an epidemic of the disease.
“The decree [de emergência] it has some effects: the first of which is that it sensitizes the authorities, mainly the Ministry of Health, to classify the state of SP as one of the states of emergency. There is an allocation of funds that awaits definition by the Ministry of Health regarding the allocation of resources to combat the disease.
Furthermore, the measure “makes the acquisition of equipment, hiring of personnel or outsourcing and measures to combat the disease a little easier and does something else: attract attention, especially from the population”.
