Dengue cases are on the rise again and worry the health sector in Brazil

Brazil is experiencing a new cycle of increased transmission of dengue in these first months of 2022. The number of cases increased by 72% in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period last year.

Transmitted by a mosquito, the Aedes Aegypti, the main protection against dengue is prevention, with measures that prevent the proliferation of the insect. The mosquito, by the way, is also responsible for spreading chikungunya and zika.

In Brazil, a vaccine was developed by the Butantan Institute and is in the testing phase. There is also a vaccine approved in the country, manufactured by a foreign laboratory, but which is not distributed by the SUS (Sistema Único de Saúde).

To explain why dengue is still a concern in the country and how to fight it, Carol Nogueira talks in this episode of E Tem Mais with Renato Kfouri, director of the Brazilian Society of Immunizations, and Leonardo Bastos, researcher at Fiocruz and coordinator of InfoDengue.
