Demolition of a burning building in downtown São Paulo begins this Saturday (16)

This Saturday (16), at 8 am, the demolition of the building that caught fire in the 25 de Março region, in downtown São Paulo, an area nationally known for its popular retail stores, which receives thousands of consumers daily, begins.

The massive fire started last Sunday night (10), and the Fire Department took about 70 hours to contain the flames. No casualties were reported.

Although there are, at this moment, no previous signs of risk of total rupture, the risk of occasional landslides remains; as a result, the city of São Paulo decided to demolish the building. Work will take place seven days a week, always from 7 am to 5 pm.

In total, nine buildings were closed by the city hall, in the vicinity of the fire site, due to the risk of falling.

According to the Municipal Department of Urban Infrastructure and Works (SIURB), the demolition service will be done mechanically, without implosion.

On Friday (15), SIURB technicians analyzed the complementary data collected, such as plans, drone images and reports.

“From this analysis, the work plan and the method that will be used in the demolition of the building will be defined. We clarify that there will be no implosion, the demolition will be carried out mechanically”, informed the city hall.

Safety

A scheme will be set up to ensure the safety of residents and workers in the region. The Comércio e Indústria Building is located at 78 Comendador Abdo Schahin Street.

“The perimeter of the building will be insulated with siding and the entire structure will be covered with screens. The first works to be carried out are the cleaning of the site and the shoring of the entire structure. [com armações de aço entre os andares]. As it is an emergency action, the deadlines for completion will be established during the work, as well as the amount that will be invested, informed the city of São Paulo.

“Approximately 100 stores were totally destroyed,” said Urias. She also said that other establishments are closed as a precautionary measure in case there is a risk of the building collapsing that caught fire.
