The Democratic Party in the United States faces a double challenge after Joe Biden dropped out of the re-election race. According to Roberto Uebel, professor of International Relations at ESPM, Democrats need to decide who will be their presidential candidate in the November elections, in addition to maintaining the party’s legacy and Biden’s governability in the next six months.
Uebel highlights that Biden now only has the responsibility to govern, and can bring forward more progressive agendas that were “shelved” due to the electoral race. “Joe Biden now only has the responsibility to govern and can bring forward his most progressive agendas that were shelved due to the electoral race itself,” says the expert.
The professor points out that the Democratic Party is divided over the choice of Biden’s replacement. Vice President Kamala Harris appears to be a natural choice, but her candidacy could indicate a continuation of the Biden administration, which worries some sectors of the party.
Other names mentioned as possible candidates include California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor and the governors of Kentucky and Pennsylvania. The latter represent swing states that are crucial to the outcome of the election. These are electoral colleges that do not have a clear preference between Democrats and Republicans and, therefore, are so important in the presidential race.
Decisive factors for choosing a candidate
Uebel highlights three main points that will be considered by Democrats when choosing the presidential and vice-presidential candidates: internal party polls, considering rejection and approval ratings; popular appeal and voting intentions in all 50 states, especially in swing states; a candidate who is not necessarily seen as a continuation of the Biden administration.
“I think we have to pay close attention to these four states next week, because either the Democratic candidate or the vice-presidential candidate, whose convention will be next month, will probably come from there,” concludes the professor.
The Democratic Party’s decision will be crucial not only for the November elections, but also for maintaining governability and the Democratic legacy in the final months of Joe Biden’s term.
