The next step in Greece is taken by the German group Delivery Hero, which owns the food and supermarket distribution company, efood. Delivery Hero, which had established a payment management company, received a license to operate a payment institution from the Bank of Greece. The relevant decision is signed by the president of the BoG, Giannis Stournaras. It should be noted that if a company receives a license from the Bank of Greece to provide and perform payment services, it has the right to operate in all member states of the European Union.
The license from the Central Bank of the country concerns the provision of payment services either on its behalf or for third parties. This practically means that Delivery Hero will henceforth be able to make payment transactions, including the transfer of funds to a payment account it maintains as a payment service provider or to another payment provider.
At the same time, however, it will be able to maintain a network of means of payment but also to proceed with the acceptance of payment transactions.
The example of the Middle East and North Africa
It will be recalled that Delivery Hero has been working with Mastercard in the field of electronic payments since 2020 to digitize its payment system in all its brands in the Middle East and North Africa region.
The move covered the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Jordan and Egypt through Delivery Hero brands. Consumers who placed their orders through the respective Delivery Hero applications could pay for their transactions without interruption. Customers for their part could also choose to pay through their digital wallet for their food orders.
The move also marked the release of a virtual card, through which more than 650,000 distributors of the German group in the aforementioned geographical area could have direct access to their profits, through their mobile devices, but also manage them for their purchases. . Thus, riders could also make daily purchases online using this virtual card.
In addition, partner restaurants got into the process of settling order payments faster through local Delivery Hero brands. Under the initiative, they were also given the opportunity to make supplier purchases, pay employee salaries and transfer money through the Mastercard platform.
Payment subsidiary in Greece
Therefore, it will be particularly interesting to see the continuation as well as the steps that Delivery Hero plans to follow for our country, which in order to obtain the relevant license and be able to enter the payment services, set up a company in Greece under the name, Delivery Hero Payments Single Person SA Vice President of this company is Dr. Eike Helbig, head of the legal department for the Delivery Hero group on a global basis, while Konstantinos Akrivos, president and financial director of the group’s subsidiary in our country, efood (online delivery), also participates in the management of this company.
One of the largest players in the world in the distribution of food orders
