A man, considered by the police to be an “expert” in attacks on ATMs, was arrested this Tuesday (26) by police officers from the State Department of Criminal Investigations (Deic), in the south zone of São Paulo.
According to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the man would be one of the most active in this type of crime.
The suspect had already been arrested in 2016, however, when benefiting from the semi-open regime, in 2021, he left prison using an electronic ankle bracelet, but broke the seal on the equipment and escaped. The action to arrest the suspect was carried out by police officers from the 5th Patrimônio Police Station, who obtained information on his whereabouts.
Investigations also revealed that the suspect lived in a middle-class apartment in the Socorro neighborhood, in the south of the capital. Therefore. The agents prepared a siege detailing the possibilities of reaction. The objective was to avoid “side effects”, according to Deic.
According to the police, the floor was “isolated” and the criminal refused to open the door, which ended up being forcibly opened by the police, who entered the apartment and carried out the arrest. At the time, the man even presented false documents to try to deceive investigators.
After arrest, he was taken to the headquarters of the 5th Patrimônio Police Station, where he was charged with using a false document, remaining at the disposal of the Court.
In 2016, he and 15 other suspects broke into a house and held a woman hostage. At the time, the gang reacted against the police and shot at the teams. Everyone turned themselves in after negotiations.
