Deforestation in the Amazon fell by 50% in 2023, compared to 2022, according to the Deter system, from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), released this Friday (5). On the other hand, the devastation of the Cerrado, the second largest Brazilian biome, increased by 43% in the same period.
In absolute data, there were 5,151 km² and 7,828 km² of deforested area in each ecosystem, respectively. The data comes from Inpe's Real-Time Deforestation Detection System (Deter), and covers the year 2023 until December 29th.
It is the first time that the Deter system, in operation since 2018, records a deforested area in the Cerrado, which occupies around 22% of the national territory, larger than that devastated in the Amazon, which covers more than 50% of the entire Brazilian territory. according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The numbers also represent the highest level of deforestation in the Cerrado ever recorded by Deter, and the lowest in the Amazon.
The area under deforestation alert in the Cerrado, in 2023, was 7,828 km². In 2022, 5,463 km² were recorded. Maranhão was the state with the largest area affected, 1,765 km², followed by Bahia, with 1,727 km². The region of Altamira (PA) is the place with the greatest degradation in the Amazon this year (1,284 km²).
The loss of vegetation in the two biomes, combined, was 12,979 km² in 2023, a value 18% lower than in 2022 (15,740 km²).
In the Legal Amazon, the area with deforestation alerts was 5,152 km². In 2022, the number had reached 10,278 km². In the region, Pará was the state that recorded the largest area of ​​vegetation destroyed in 2023, with 1,902 km², followed by Mato Grosso, with 1,408 km².
