Debris from Turkey earthquake larger than Manhattan Island: UN

The amount of rubble left by the earthquakes in Turkey forms a line of 100 km² of rubble, larger than the island of Manhattan in New York, in the United States, which is 59 km² in extension.

The calculation was made by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) after the strong earthquake that hit the country and Syria on February 6th. The earthquakes lasted until the 20th.

According to the UN, the removal of rubble is necessary for the delivery of food, water and other supplies, and for the return of social and economic activities in the country. At least 1.5 million people were affected by the consequences of the disaster. In Turkey, the weight of wreckage ranges from 116 million to 210 million tons.

The death toll from the earthquakes in both countries surpassed 50,000 on Friday (24),

The challenge involves clearing a 10km by 10km area covered in debris piled up to a meter high. In recent days, Turkey authorized the passage of 335 trucks to Syria.

This Saturday (25), the UNDP and other partners will start removing more than 10 million tons of debris in Aleppo, Syria. There, the UN agency estimates that 500 homes need to be built at a price of US$ 113.5 million.

The country’s experts have already inspected more than 1 million buildings. The report points to damage or total destruction of 156,000 buildings. Those that did not fall in the quake will have to be demolished for safety reasons.

humanitarian crisis

During the week, United Nations agencies sent dozens of truckloads of supplies to earthquake victims in both Turkey and Syria.

A total of 53 vehicles crossed Turkish territory into northwest Syria with donations from the World Food Program (WFP), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

The shipments contain food, shelter, hygiene products and other essential items for thousands of people. At least 47 trucks used the Bab al-Hawa crossing and six through Bab al-Salam.

tremor aftershocks

Northern and western Syria is still seeing aftershocks that cause buildings to collapse, displacement and injuries.

Thousands of people sleep outdoors or in collective shelters in a harsh winter in the northern hemisphere.

WFP provided food assistance to 900,000 people. So far, only 4% of the UN humanitarian appeal for Turkey has been received.
