Deb Haaland was chosen by Joe Biden, president elect of the United States, as internal secretary. That of the New Mexico congresswoman is a historic choice: if confirmed by the Senate, she would become the first Native American to lead the federal agency that deals with the American population and territory. She would also be the first Native American to join a president’s cabinet.
A voice like mine has never been a Cabinet secretary or at the head of the Department of Interior.
Growing up in my mother’s Pueblo household made me fierce. I’ll be fierce for all of us, our planet, and all of our protected land.
I am honored and ready to serve.

The Interior department, in the United States, deals with police and public order, but also with resource management natural (gives the green light to drilling for example), forest heritage, reserves and national parks (to decide the fate of Bears Ears, a territory established by Barack Obama as a national monument and reduced by 85% by Trump).
Above all, it follows programs for ethnic minorities.

Debra Haaland, 60enne dell’Arizona, was one of the first two Native American women ever elected to the United States Congress. He has been in the American House for two years and Democratic speaker Nancy Pelosi would have given her yes despite leaving a vacant seat.
Native mother and father of Norwegian descent, both military, the deputy is part of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, originally from New Mexico. He got his degree in law as a single mother after switching 13 schools before graduation and paying for college by selling food. He did not pass the bar exam and chose the path of politics.
“I’m Deb Haaland and Congress has never heard a voice like mine,” he assured his constituents. He vowed to fight for education, economic justice and racial equality. He was among the Native Americans protesting against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline in 2016 and marched against Trump’s election in Washington.
It offers medical assistance for all and one $ 15 federal minimum wage. Much of his commitment is aimed at women, the natives are among the first victims of violence, and the environment, for the protection of public lands.
It’s just the last of the pawns of what it looks like the most inclusive US government ever: Biden’s deputy is Kamala Harris, Janet Yellen is the first woman nominated for the Treasury, Avril Haines leads the intelligence, at the Pentagon is the African American Lloyd Auster, Alejandro Mayorkas is the first Hispanic to head Homeland Security and Pete Buttigieg the first gay declared to the government in the transport sector. The natives were key to the election in Arizona and Wisconsin, and Biden rewards them by choosing a person who also appeals to environmentalists and his party left.
