Authorization for the use of the Rafah crossing was suspended this Sunday (5), due to the impasse between Israel and Hamas over the departure of injured people from the Gaza Strip.
Brazilians in the region have not yet been authorized to use the escape route, unlike another 2,200 foreigners, including nationals from the United States, United Kingdom and Japan. This Sunday, no list with any nationality was released.
The justifications for suspending the lists, as well as the criteria for defining the names, are not clear. According to Itamaraty sources, the situation of the injured would be the issue of the moment.
On Friday (3), the Israeli Army bombed an ambulance in Gaza with the argument that the vehicle would be used by commanders of the Hamas group. The attack would have left people dead.
Since the opening of Rafah, injured people have been given priority to leave Gaza and be taken to Egyptian hospitals. Israel, however, accuses Hamas of infiltrating the wounded, to use the humanitarian rescue condition and hide its group’s militants.
When contacted, the Israeli embassy in Brasília did not comment on the suspension of the publication of names authorized to use the Rafah crossing.
From the beginning, the Israeli representation in Brazil has said that Israel does not determine who enters and who leaves the lists. At the same time, the embassy highlighted that the use of hospitals and other health facilities is a “Hamas method”, which, for Israel, would justify the distrust regarding transport carried out by ambulances.
