Dead David Sassoli, president of the European Parliament

65-year-old Sassoli announced last December that he would not return to the helm of the European Parliament. His position was due to the desire not to divide the pro-European majority made up of socialists, the European People’s Party and liberals, leaving the alternation with the popular as the presidency. The former RAI journalist had received several messages of closeness yesterday from representatives of various political parties in Italy and Europe.

Sassoli entered politics in 2009 as an MEP of the Democratic Party. Since 2014 he was Vice-President of the Parliament e from July 2019 he had the leadership of the Strasbourg assembly. He had also tried the race for the seat of mayor of Rome, but was defeated in the primary by Ignazio Marino. He had previously been a journalist, television presenter and deputy director of Tg1, of which he had conducted the prime time editions.

He was born in Florence, but had lived almost all of his life in Roma where he had moved with his father, a journalist. He had attended the classic Virgil and had enrolled in political science before starting work. He had gone through several editorial offices: The weather, the agency Asca, the Roman editorial board of Day and then the Rai. He was married and had two children: his wife Alessandra Vittorini, an art historian at the helm of the School of Heritage and Cultural Activities Foundation, and his children Giulio and Livia.
