The Civil Defense of Santa Catarina issued a warning, this Wednesday (24), of persistent and voluminous rains that are expected to hit the state in the coming days due to the presence of a meteorological system known as the High Level Cyclonic Vortex (VCAN).
The weather forecast indicates that several regions of the state may be affected, especially the north coast. There are risks of flooding, landslides, flooding and flash floods. The expectation is that it will rain more than 200 millimeters by next Sunday (28).
According to meteorologists from the state's Civil Defense, the High Level Cyclonic Vortex is a meteorological system hundreds of kilometers long, on a large scale, that acts at altitudes above 5 km in the atmosphere.
“It consists of a low pressure system of subtropical origin, which rotates clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. In the southern region of Brazil, regardless of the season, the system acts causing winds and intense rain in regions located to the east and northeast from its center”, says the explanation.
The Vortex can last from a few hours to weeks, but generally lasts a few days.
Due to the alert, Civil Defense recommended that the population anticipate and adopt preventive measures to ensure safety and minimize the impacts caused by the meteorological phenomenon.
The Vortex also causes sea disturbances. According to the Civil Defense meteorology team, waves on the state's coast can reach up to 2.5 meters between Greater Florianópolis and the North Coast.
Due to the heavy rains predicted, the State Secretariat for Protection and Civil Defense of Santa Catarina advises that residents:
- Avoid contact with water and do not drive through flooded areas;
- Avoid traveling on submerged bridges and bridges;
- Be careful with children, the elderly and animals near rivers and streams;
- Stay away from posts and trees;
- Pay attention to any movement of earth or rocks near your home;
- Pay attention to cracks in walls or walls.
