Cyclone in RS: helicopter cable breaks and woman dies after falling into river during rescue

Rio Grande do Sul has already recorded at least 21 deaths caused by heavy rains resulting from the passage of an extratropical cyclone through the southern region.

The state governor, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), reported that one of these deaths happened in the municipality of Lajeado during a rescue operation.

In a statement released to the press, he said that the “incident occurred with one of the state’s aircraft”.

“One of our military police officers was helping a lady in the Taquari Valley, on the Taquari River. Close to reaching the aircraft, the cable broke and unfortunately the two fell into the river and this lady lost her life”, said Leite.

The governor said the officer was seriously injured and was taken to the hospital and that his life was not in danger.

The heavy rains also caused flooding in other cities where the Taquari River flows.

In Roca Sales, for example, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) rescued a mother and her baby on the roof of a house in a municipality affected by the rains caused by an extratropical cyclone in the South region.

“This Tuesday morning (5), the Federal Highway Police began rescue work for those affected by the flooding of the Taquari River. The work is concentrated in the municipalities of Roca Sales, Muçum and Encantado. In these areas there are a number of people who are sheltering on the roofs of houses to protect themselves from the flood,” the PRF said in a statement.

“During the operation, the federal road police rescued a baby and a lady who were on the roofs of their houses waiting for help. The actions took place in the municipality of Roca Sales”, he added.

Cyclone moves south

The extratropical cyclone that hit the southern region in recent days has moved away, but the passage of the cold front associated with it causes a sharp drop in temperature in the southern region this Tuesday (5), points out Climatempo.

In an interview with CNN Climatempo meteorologist Maria Clara Sassaki said that some cities in Rio Grande do Sul recorded, in just that first week, all the rain expected for the month of September.

“This large amount of rain keeps the alert over the next few days, even if the weather is firmer, because the water still takes time to drain. The rivers end up overflowing, causing new floods, new landslides”, he explained.

The specialist also said that, with the cyclone’s removal, firm weather returns to predominate in the South and opens up space for polar air to lower temperatures in the region even further. In the border region with Uruguay and in the Gaúcha Campaign, the risk of frost is accentuated.

“Throughout the day, steady weather returns to Rio Grande do Sul and the polar air takes over the southern region of the country. Now we have a risk of frost, with very low temperatures over the next few days in the south of the country”, he reported.
