Crown of the Statue of Liberty reopens to the public for the first time in 2 years

The public can re-enter the crown portion of the Statue of Liberty in New York, since the first time since the venue closed its doors in March 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The news was given by a spokesman for the monument to CNN .

While parts of the Statue of Liberty have gradually reopened during the pandemic, the crown has been kept off-limits for more than two and a half years as of Tuesday.

The National Park Service, which manages the monument, was trying to pull off a smooth reopening without much hype in late October to commemorate the 136th anniversary of the statue, which opened in 1886, said Jerry Willis, a spokesman for the National Statue of Liberty.

Willis said the plan was to accustom newly hired staff to the crown’s specific security protocols by having them train with veteran tour guides, but that didn’t happen.

“People were really excited about the news,” Willis said.

According to the spokesperson, public demand for access to the crown has always existed, and park officials had been hoping to reopen access for some time, but several factors stood in the way.

Willis said there was nothing to delay the reopening, but a number of factors that continued to push back its schedule, such as lifting city, state and federal pandemic restrictions and also dealing with a record hiring pool.
