CPI would investigate Petrobras’ exorbitant price and profit policy, says Ricardo Barros

Bolsonaro deputies should ask this Monday (20) for the establishment of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate the management of Petrobras, according to President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

In an interview with CNN on Monday (20), federal deputy Ricardo Barros (PP-PR) said that a Petrobras CPI would have the objective of “evaluating the price of fuel and the reasons for being so high”.

Among the possible focuses of investigation commented on by the government leader in the Chamber of Deputies are the state-owned company’s pricing policy, the so-called International Parity Price (PPI), and the “very high profits of the company” – which was R$44, 5 billion in the first quarter of this year.

Ricardo Barros explained that there will be, this Monday, a meeting of leaders from the base of the government with the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), in which the motivations for a possible request for a CPI will be debated, and how it would be conducted. .

“But it is a decision to be made. So let’s wait for the leaders to have all the information that is being gathered so that we can make a decision,” he said.

The deputy argued that Petrobras has, in its foundation, “a social character of reasonable prices, sustainable prices”.

“The company needs to get back to its fundamentals. There is the governance model that was established, which aims at profit and remunerates directors very well. There will be a need to reframe and reposition the company looking at its fundamentals”, said Ricardo Barros.

“If Petrobras has no interest in fulfilling its social role, it has no interest in being part of the government. It could be privatized. As long as she belongs to the government, she needs to fulfill her social role”, he added.

“Bolsonaro guides, but indicated does not comply”

With the resignation of José Mauro Coelho this Monday (20), Bolsonaro is expected to appoint the fourth president for Petrobras during his term.

Ricardo Barros says that “President Bolsonaro’s orientation is very clear”. “What he needs is people who follow his direction,” he said.

For the government leader, the president always makes public appeals for there to be no increases in fuel prices, but the nominees do not comply.

“We hope that the nominees who have joined now will heed the president’s guidance,” he said.

“We hope that this Board and this board that they will assume will think about having reasonable profits and apply this difference from exorbitant profits in their social function”, he added.
