Covid: unvaccinated are 97 times more likely to die compared to those with booster

People who are not vaccinated against Covid-19 are 97 times more likely to die from Covid-19 than people who are vaccinated and receive a booster dose, according to data presented Wednesday by the director. from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Rochelle Walensky.

“Vaccination and booster doses substantially decrease the risk of death from Covid-19,” Walensky said at a presentation by the White House Covid-19 Response Team as he presented data collected in the week ending December 4.

“The average number of weekly deaths for those who were not vaccinated was 9.7 per 100,000 people, but only 0.7 per 100,000 people for those who were vaccinated. This means that the risk of dying from Covid-19 was 14 times higher for people who were not vaccinated compared to those who received only one primary series. For those boosted, the average weekly death rate was 0.1 per 100,000 people, meaning unvaccinated individuals were 97 times more likely to die compared to those boosted.”

Walensky also presented data from the CDC’s Covid-NET surveillance system, showing that 54% of people hospitalized for Covid-19 over age 65 are not vaccinated, despite only 12% of people in this age group being unvaccinated overall.

Only 8% of hospitalized patients in this dataset were vaccinated and given the booster dose. “These same trends are seen across all age groups,” she said.

“These data show us that the percentage of people who are currently hospitalized for Covid-19 are disproportionately unvaccinated and disproportionately unboosted. Furthermore, these data confirm that vaccination and booster continue to protect against serious illness and hospitalization, even during the Omicron outbreak.”
