The variants that fuel the cases of Covid in China (attention, in particular, is focused on the XBB.1.5 subvariant of the SarsCoV2 virus, also known as «Gryphon») have already been present for some time also in Italy. They are the first laboratory resultsannounced by Health Minister Orazio Schillaci during the Senate briefing on the Covid situation following the emergency in China.
The first results on the tests of passengers arriving at Fiumicino airport have also arrived: out of 49 passengers they result 5 cases of positivity. This is considered a “normal” situation.with about 10% positive.
Minister Schillaci communicated that “constant monitoring” will be necessary to verify the possible appearance of a new variant of the SarsCoV2 virus “that goes beyond Omicron”. But being careful to «avoid alarmist interpretations. At the moment the variants of China – such as Gryphon – are the same ones that have already been circulating globally for some time».
It’s still: “A connection with the EU is needed to limit the influx of positive passengers from the Asian country, we have maintained relations with the ECDC for a continuous exchange of information for rapid measures and Italy participates in the early warning project”.
Italy was the first European country to introduce theswab obligation for travelers from China until January 31st. Those entering Italy from China will have to present the certification to demonstrate that they have undergone a molecular test in the 72 hours prior to entering our country, or, in the 48 hours prior, an antigen test. Then there is the obligation to undergo an antigen test upon arrival at the airport or – if this is not possible – within 48 hours. In case of positivity, it is necessary to immediately undergo the molecular test for sequencing and fiduciary isolation with final test. The rules do not apply to children under the age of 6 provided they do not have any symptoms of Covid-19.
Schillaci, meanwhile, has signed the extension for the use of masks in health facilities and nursing homes until 30 April next.
