Court accepts complaint and Zara employee becomes defendant for the crime of racism

The Rio de Janeiro Court accepted the complaint filed by the State Public Prosecutor’s Office against the Zara store security guard, Henrique Durães Bernardes, who is now a defendant for the crime of racism.

The security guard at the clothing store was accused of following and stopping football player Guilherme Quintino, while the athlete was in the store with his partner. The incident happened on June 18 and was registered at the Racial Crimes and Intolerance Offenses Police Station (Decradi).

According to the complaint, offered by prosecutor Alexandre Themistocles, when he abandoned the purchase, “the athlete was approached and prevented from leaving the store by security, suffering the embarrassment of having to prove that he was not taking any item of clothing from the store”, says the document.

The case gained repercussion after the athlete exposed the case on social media in a video recorded by his partner. The images show the security guard accompanying the athlete through the Zara store, in Barra Shopping, and preventing him from leaving the place, after he gave up shopping.

At the time, Zara stated that it does not accept any type of discrimination and that it is investigating what happened, reiterating that the company’s impractical approach does not reflect its positioning and values. Barra Shopping also stated that it repudiates any acts of discrimination.

CNN sought the security guard’s defense and will publish a statement as soon as it receives feedback.
