Couple is arrested at BH airport with slimming medicine pens

A couple of Brazilians who live in England was arrested in the act at dawn on Wednesday (24) at Belo Horizonte International Airport, in Confins, metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte.

The two were trying to enter the country with 48 pens containing controlled use of a hidden weight controlled effect, as it is goods subject to health surveillance with regulated use and entry control in the country.

The arrest was made in a joint action between the Federal Police and the IRS. The seizure occurred during a routine inspection. The pens were hidden between whiskey bottles in the passenger’s luggage in an attempt to circumvent the inspection.

According to the Federal Police “the attempt to hide the drug between alcoholic beverages is serious risk to public health. This is because inappropriate transport compromises the conservation of drugs, which require specific conditions of temperature and storage. The use of drugs outside these conditions can cause severe health adverse effects.”

Seized pens contain substances originally developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, but which have been improperly used for fast weight loss.

When used without prescription and medical follow -up, these medications can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, hypoglycemia, muscle mass loss and psychological impacts and in more severe cases involve kidney changes and severe allergic reactions.

The seized drugs were sent to the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) for analysis and appropriate action.

The couple was taken to the Federal Police Superintendence in Minas Gerais, where the arrest warrant was drawn up in the act and arbitrated bail.
