Coronavirus: Mandatory use of mask for domestic flights resumes in Pakistan

Pakistan’s aviation authority has made it mandatory to use a mask on domestic flights following a gradual increase in the number of coronavirus cases across the country, it said in a statement.

The order came a day after the announcement by the country’s largest city, Karachi, that the positive rate had risen to 21% compared to the national level of 2.8%.

“With immediate effect, the use of the mask will be mandatory on domestic flights,” the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement late Sunday night.

Pakistan has recorded very few cases of coronavirus in recent months and has lifted almost all restrictive measures.

But in the last 24 hours, the national positivity rate has risen to 2.85% with 382 cases and two deaths, according to data released today by the National Institutes of Health in Islamabad.

One month ago, the positivity rate was 0.54% with 79 cases and no deaths.

According to the Institute, 85% of eligible Pakistanis are fully vaccinated against coronavirus.

Pakistan abolished the National Center for Administration and Business, which was responsible for managing the pandemic, on March 31, as the number of cases dropped to its lowest level since the pandemic began in 2020.
