Residents of Copacabana, in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro, mobilized to hold a demonstration against violence this Friday afternoon (8). The protest should take place in front of the 12th Police Station, which is investigating recent robberies in the region and the formation of groups that promise intervention to combat robberies.
William Correia, who is being called the “Sheriff of Copacabana”, should be heard this Friday at the location. He published a video on social media calling on residents to take to the streets to stop the bandits.
Through social media, his lawyer, Bernardo Santoro, said that William has always defended neighborhood surveillance as a partnership and public support for the police.
In the caption of a photo next to William, he also states that neighbor watching has been regulated in the United States for 80 years and has a technical note from the Sheriffs’ Association and the United States Department of Justice.

“It is the best way for organized civil society to help with information and surveillance, not aggression. My friend never defended justice or aggression, but he always defended good people,” he said in another excerpt.
Also expected to give a statement is physical education teacher and jiu-jitsu master Fernando Pinduka. At the beginning of the week, he published a text asking for the involvement of gyms and fighters in Copacabana in combating crimes that occur in the region.
After the repercussions, he made a new publication saying that he does not encourage violence.
“Fight friends, I am a master educator. Jiu-jitsu is a scientific martial art aimed at self-defense. This initiative to bring together gyms and fighters has no objective to carry out confrontations with anyone, just to organize a movement of alert and protection”, he explained.
The Rio Civil Police stated that they are investigating both the various robberies committed in the neighborhood in recent days and the formation of groups of residents who organize the fight against criminals.
