“Controlling and self-centered maniac”: writer attacks Tom Cruise in book

Screenwriter Frederic Raphael, 91, described “Mission: Impossible” star Tom Cruise as a “self-absorbed, controlling maniac” in his latest book, titled “Last Post,” by according to the “New York Post”.

Winner of two Oscar statuettes, Raphael and director Stanley Kubrick had a disagreement during the recording of the film “Eyes Wide Shut”, from 1999. The author, who scripted the feature, did not agree with the style of direction that Kubrick wanted to print on the film.

According to information from the newspaper, the swoop meant that Raphael was not invited to the film’s premiere.

The conflict gained a new chapter recently, after the publication of Raphael’s book, “Last Post”, last Thursday (27). In the work, the author claims that Kubrick’s wife, Christiane Harlan, and Tom Cruise are responsible for derogatory information about him on Wikipedia.

“I was never called a liar by anyone as I was by the Harlan clan and by Tom Cruise, a self-centered controlling maniac with whom I never exchanged a word,” wrote the author. He also alleges that the duo tried to remove his name from the film’s closing credits.

According to the newspaper, the speech exposed the terrible environment that existed in the production of “De Olhos Bem Fechados”, starring the star and his then-wife, actress Nicole Kidman.

The actors’ relationship was also a target of the screenwriter. In one part of the book, while Raphael simulated a conversation with Kubrick, the author raised suspicions about the couple’s true feelings.

“There was something just a little naive about his idea that casting a couple [da vida real] as a couple [no filme] would allow you to put ‘the truth’ on the canvas. Did you honestly think Cruise and Kidman were united by genuine passion rather than a professional union?

So far, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, who were married from 1990 to 2001, have not publicly commented on Raphael’s statements.
