Former Conservative French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Tuesday declared his support for Emmanuel Macron ahead of the second round of France’s presidential election.
“I think he has the necessary experience as we face a deep international crisis, more complex than ever,” Sarkozy said in a statement posted on social media.
Macron faces the far-right candidate Marine Le Pen in the second round, which takes place on April 24. According to opinion polls, the dispute between the two is fierce, and should be decided by less than 10 percentage points.
Macron leads the polls with around 51% of the vote and Le Pen with 49%.
So far, four of the candidates who contested the first round, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Anna Hidalgo, Valerie Pecresse and Yannick Jadot, declared opposition to Le Pen in the second round.
The first round was marked by the lowest participation of French people in the polls since 2017. According to the French Ministry of the Interior, the turnout percentage was 65% at 5 pm, while the rate in 2017 recorded for the same time was 69.4%. .
