Celebrities across the UK have offered their condolences to a BBC sports commentator after his wife and two daughters were murdered, in deaths that have again highlighted the epidemic of violence against women.
Carol Hunt, 61, wife of BBC horse racing commentator John Hunt, and her daughters Hannah Hunt, 28, and Louise Hunt, 25, died after an attack in Bushey, northwest London, on Tuesday (9), according to police.
A 26-year-old suspect was found by British police in Enfield, north London, on Wednesday (10) and is in a serious condition.
He is in a serious condition in hospital and has not yet spoken to authorities, Hertfordshire Police said in a statement.
A crossbow was recovered during the investigation, which police believe was used in a “targeted incident.”
Tributes to the commentator
A number of BBC journalists have paid tribute to their colleague, in a show of grief across the organisation and the wider sports industry.
Mark Chapman, BBC Sport presenter, said: “John Hunt is our colleague and friend, not just to the current 5 Live Sport team but to all those who have worked here with him over the past 20 years.”
“On behalf of everyone connected to 5 Live Sport, our love, thoughts and support are with John and his family,” Chapman said live on air.
Dan Walker, who presented the BBC’s Football Focus programme, posted on X that: “John Hunt is one of the best and his life was destroyed yesterday.”
Tim Peach, a BBC Cricket producer, described Hunt as “one of the kindest, most caring people I have ever worked with”.
“He is unmatched in his work, but he is always happiest talking about ‘my Carol’ and ‘my girls,’” he wrote on X.
Michael Owen, a former footballer and racehorse owner, also posted on social media after England’s European Championship win, writing that “as the nation celebrates, spare a thought for John Hunt. I can’t remember feeling so horrified in years. Those poor girls. Truly awful.”
The British Horseracing Authority said in a statement that its thoughts were with Hunt, his family and friends. “It is impossible to comprehend the horror that has been inflicted on them by this terrible event,” said Julie Harrington, the organisation’s chief executive.
Ascot Racecourse, one of the UK’s most famous horse racing venues, echoed the organization’s words and posted that “our thoughts are with John Hunt at this tragic time.”
