Coca-Cola and Starbucks follow McDonald’s and suspend operations in Russia

US beverage giants Coca-Cola and Starbucks followed fast-food chain McDonald’s and decided to suspend operations in Russia. The move further expands the list of companies that canceled Moscow after the attacks on Ukraine.

In a letter to chain partners, Starbucks Coffee Company CEO Kevin Johnson said the decision to suspend operations in Russia includes the shipment of all Starbucks products. “Our licensed partner has agreed to immediately pause store operations and will provide support to the nearly 2,000 partners in Russia who depend on Starbucks for their livelihoods,” the executive wrote.

Coca-Cola said it is suspending its operations in Russia, but did not provide figures or the impact of the decision. He also said that he will continue to monitor the situation. “Our hearts go out to the people who are suffering the inconceivable effects of these tragic events in Ukraine,” the company said.

Also on Tuesday (8), McDonald’s said that it will temporarily close its approximately 850 restaurants and that it will pause its operations in Russia. The decision was communicated by the CEO of the group, Chris Kempczinski, to employees and franchisees of the network.

McDonald’s has been operating in Russia for more than 30 years and has said it will maintain the salary of the 62,000 employees it has in the country. “McDonald’s has decided to temporarily close all our restaurants in Russia and pause all market operations,” wrote the group’s CEO.

“We understand the impact this will have on our Russian colleagues and partners, which is why we are prepared to provide full support in Ukraine and Russia,” added Kempczinski.
