The researcher of the Graduate Program in Ecology and Conservation of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) Diego Viana spoke, in an interview with CNN, about the case of the 60-year-old caretaker, who was killed by a pintan jaguar in Mato Grosso do Sul.
Viana stressed that, although rare, jaguar attacks on humans may occur . The UFMS researcher also clarified aspects about what happened and the nature of these attacks in the Pantanal region.
According to the expert, there are several factors that can lead to risky situations: “The jaguar defending puppies or a prey that it has slaughtered, a wounded jaguar, but mainly, it is very important to look at human practices that generate risk.”
A particularly worrying practice, according to Viana, is the “Seva”, which consists of feeding wild animals at certain points. This practice, prohibited by law in Mato Grosso do Sul, can cause animals to lose the natural fear of approaching humans, associating human presence with a source of food.
Prevention and Security measures
Viana emphasized the importance of strategies to avoid risk situations. “Today there is the possibility of putting an fence around the house, an electric fence, making noise, not finding normal this approach of jaguars,” explained the researcher.
The expert also highlighted the need for a collaborative approach between researchers, government, tourism agents, fishermen and the local community to develop and implement effective security measures.
He emphasized the need for effective communication between all sectors of society to ensure a conserved Pantanal.
