A historic confrontation between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump is scheduled for Thursday (27) on CNN, when possible candidates from the Democratic and Republican parties meet for their first debate of this election cycle.
This year, the event will take place earlier than in previous years, since the first presidential debate was televised in 1960, between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. Generally, clashes take place in September or October.
See below for everything you need to know about the debate.
When and where will the debate take place?
The 90-minute debate takes place this Thursday, June 27, at 10pm. It will be broadcast on CNN Brazil live direct from the studios of CNN in Atlanta.
Who will be the debate moderators?

How to watch the debate?
The presidential debate is part of special coverage by CNN Brasil that will begin at 9pm with a special edition of WW, presented by William Waack. The confrontation will be shown later, at 10pm Brasília time. After the debate, América Decide provides analysis and repercussions. It will be possible to follow through channel 577 and YouTube CNN Brazil .
How are candidates qualified to debate?
Joe Biden and Donald Trump will be the only presidential candidates to participate in the debate.
To qualify, candidates had to meet the requirements outlined in Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution to serve as president, as well as file a formal statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission.
According to the parameters established by CNN in May, all participating debaters had to appear on a sufficient number of state ballots to meet the 270 electoral vote threshold needed to win the presidency, and receive at least a 15% voting intent in at least four separate national polls of registered or likely voters who meet the standards of the CNN for reports.
Research that meets these standards is research sponsored by CNN ABC News, CBS News, Fox News, Marquette University Law School, Monmouth University, NBC News, The New York Times/Siena College, NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist College, Quinnipiac University, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post.
Biden and Trump were the only candidates to meet these requirements.
Furthermore, both agreed to participate in another debate held by the ABC network on September 10th.
What are the rules of the debate?
- The debate will last 90 minutes and will include two commercial breaks.
- Campaign teams will not be able to interact with candidates during commercials.
- Both candidates agreed to appear at a uniform lectern.
- Pulpits will be 8 feet apart.
- Positions on the stage were determined by lot. Biden will be on the right of the screen, while Trump will be on the left.
- Also after the draw, it was decided that Trump will have the closing statement.
- The microphones will be muted throughout the debate, except for the candidate speaking.
- Timers will be visible to the candidates throughout the debate.
- There will be no studio audience during the debate.
- While no props or pre-written notes are allowed on stage, candidates will be provided with a pen, pad of paper and bottle of water.
Some aspects of the debate – including the absence of a studio audience – will be different from previous debates.
But, as in the past, moderators “will use all the tools at their disposal to impose timing and ensure a civilized discussion,” according to the network.
