THE CNN Specialist in Education Claudia Costin spoke, this Wednesday (1st), about Law No. 14.350/2022 – which extends the University for All Program (Prouni) to students from private schools.
“I do not see this measure as positive. We live in Brazil with deep educational inequalities that have worsened with two years of closed schools. In this context, expanding Prouni to private school students means taking some space out of scholarships for those who need it most,” he said.
Costin also highlighted the difficulties faced by public school students during the National High School Exam (ENEM) in 2021.
“During ENEM 2021, held in November of that year, the then Minister of Education, Milton Ribeiro, did not allow students who did not feel safe to participate in the previous edition to take the test without paying the registration fee”.
Still on the expansion of Prouni, Costin pointed out that the measure is “a step towards further strengthening exclusion in access to higher education”.
“I hope that we will once again diversify students from higher education institutions because this is good for all of us”, he concluded.
