In the strong bipartisan support her campaign enjoys Cyprus for ending the illegal Turkish occupation, the co-chairman of the Hellenic Caucus in the House of Representatives (Hellenic Caucus) Chris Papas said.
THE New Hampshire Democratic Congressman was awarded by Philip Christopher during the 38th conference organized by the World Coordinating Committee of the Cyprus Struggle (WCC) in Washington. It is a conference that brings together leading legislators and actors of political life in order to keep the issue of Cyprus on the agenda of American foreign policy.
In his message, Chris Papas noted that “the Cypriot cause wants all the liberal people of the world to be able to stand together and support Cyprus (to end) the illegal occupation that continues on the island of Cyprus. The USA they must continue to lead with their values, and as co-chair of the Hellenic Caucus in the House of Representatives, I will continue to work closely with Gus Bilirakis, Nicole Malliotakis, Dina Titus, John Sarbanis, and many Philhellenes in Congress, such as Robert Menendez Jr. I’m glad to see him here. I think it was Isocrates who said that anyone who can demonstrate Greek values in mind and spirit can be Greek. And we certainly have many allies in Congress who are doing this on a bipartisan basis».
The proceedings of the PSEKA Conference in Washington will focus on the Cyprus issue, regional developments, energy and US relations with Cyprus, Greece, and the various schemes of regional cooperation that are developing in the Eastern Mediterranean region. The conference is held in collaboration with the well-known Greek-American lobbyist Mike Manatos, as well as all the main Greek-American organizations (AHEPA, AHI, HALC, HANC, Cyprus-US Chamber of Commerce).
According to the organizers and as reported by the Athens News Agency, this year’s conference will gather more than 40 high-ranking officials, who play an active role in shaping American foreign policy towards Cyprus, Greece and the Turkey. For his part, the president of PSEKA, Philip Christopher, explained that the guests have been strategically chosen, as this year’s conference will be attended by the presidents as well as the heads of the minority of all committees in Congress that play a key role in the issues that concern us occupy.
As he pointed out, “this access to so many top leaders gives us the invaluable opportunity to inform them about important events concerning Cyprus. We expect to show them that Vladimir Putin’s brutal violations of law, humanity and civilization are exactly the same as Turkey’s against America’s ally, Cyprus, and we will encourage them to pay due attention.”
The Cypriot government is represented by the Government Spokesman, Konstantinos Letympiotis, who will have contacts with members of the Senate and the American House. During his speech on the first day of the conference, Mr. Letymiotis referred to the decisive role played by the diaspora in strengthening the strategic partnership, saying “your tireless efforts have contributed to the expansion and deepening of bilateral relations between of Cyprus and the United States”.
