Choice of new UK premier due to start next week

In the United Kingdom, the Conservative Party begins the process of choosing a new prime minister after the resignation of Boris Johnson. Defense Secretary Ben Wallace is one of the favorites in the running.

The timetable and rules for choosing a successor to Boris Johnson are due to be set on Monday by the Conservative party committee. The new prime minister is expected to take office in September.

Voting to choose the next leader begins with Conservative lawmakers in an elimination scheme until only two candidates remain. Afterwards, a vote is held by mail among all party members.

A wing in the Conservative Party is trying to speed up this selection process, so that the next leader is defined in a month at the most and Boris Johnson leaves Downing Street as soon as possible.

The opposition says the prime minister must leave immediately and be replaced by an interim. Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer said if Johnson does not step down, he will present a vote of no confidence in the House of Commons next week. Which may lead to the holding of new general elections in the country.

On Thursday, when he resigned from the leadership of the Conservative party, Boris Johnson said he would remain prime minister until his successor is chosen.

The race for the position is still unpredictable. A Yougov poll of 716 Conservative Party members shows that current Defense Secretary Ben Wallace, who has gained more recognition recently for his role in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, is at the forefront.

Then come trade policy secretary Penny Mordaunt and Rishi Sunak, a former finance minister who resigned on Tuesday. Foreign Minister Liz Truss is fourth.
