China should not relax controls to curb COVID-19 and take precautionary measures, President Xi Jinping said today during a visit to Hainan Island, Reuters reports.
His remarks come as Shanghai announced more than 25,000 new cases, although the city of 25 million and the country’s financial center has been in a lockdown in recent weeks.
Beijing is under pressure to contain the largest outbreak of COVID-19 in China since the pandemic outbreak in Wuhan City in late 2019, when the new coronavirus was first identified.
Xi said China should continue with the strict “dynamic management of COVID” policy, while seeking to minimize the impact of the measures on the economy and society.
