China: High number of local transmission cases at 21-month high due to outbreak in Xi’an

China has announced the biggest increase in local COVID-19 cases in 21 months, as infections more than doubled in northwest Xi’an, China’s latest COVID outbreak.

The city of 13 million people, which entered the fourth day of the lockdown, yesterday identified 155 confirmed cases due to transmission to the community, from 75 one day earlier, according to official data released today.

This development increased the national daily infection rate to 158, the highest since China managed to control the outbreak in the country in early 2020.

Xi’an, with 485 cases of symptomatic local transmission between December 9 and 25, has taken strict measures to contain the outbreak, in line with Beijing’s policy of restricting local transmission as quickly as possible.

Residents are not allowed to leave the city without the approval of their employer or local authorities, and mass diagnostic tests are performed to detect infections.

The city has not reported any Omicron cases, and nationwide, authorities have reported only a few Omicron infections among travelers from abroad and southern China.

Including so-called imported infections, mainland China confirmed 206 new cases on December 25, compared with 140 a day earlier. No new deaths were recorded, with the total number officially remaining at 4,636. Mainland China had confirmed 101,077 cases of Covid-19 as of December 25.
