Children under one year old are at high risk for Covid-19, warns pediatrician

Pediatrician and vice president of the Brazilian Society of Immunizations Isabella Ballalai warned about the need to vaccinate the pediatric population against Covid-19.

The cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro started this Thursday (17) the immunization of children with comorbidities between six months and three years of age.

THE CNN Radio Ballalai highlighted that it was not possible to start vaccination for this group at the beginning of the pandemic, but that this does not mean that the risk did not exist for this part of the population.

“Children and teenagers from 0 to 19 years old are hospitalized and die from Covid”, he highlighted.

According to her, among these records, “70% of hospitalized patients had no comorbidities and 50% of deaths within these cases had no comorbidities.”

“Mainly children under one year old are at high risk for Covid-19,” he added.

Isabella Ballalai highlighted that Pfizer’s pediatric doses are safe and that immunizer protection is maintained, despite the emergence of new variants.

“Protection against new variants remains and against deaths and hospitalization is high,” he said.

At the same time, she recalls that 90% of deaths from Covid-19 happen in people who are not properly vaccinated.

“That means everyone over 12 needs at least one booster shot,” he recalled.
