Charles III: four months as king (plus a surprise)

After waiting 73 years before taking the throne, Charles III as soon as he became king he found himself facing many problems, including family ones. First of all the «Harry and Meghan affair». The Sussexes, who have not stopped launching poisoned public arrows against the royal family since they flew to California, marred Charles’ first four months as sovereign with the Netflix series Harry & Meghan in which they returned to accuse the Windsors of racism and they launched new heavy accusations. For example that the august relatives would have «fed to the wolves», who are happy to «lie to protect William» but are «unwilling to tell the truth» to protect Harry.

King Charles will invite Harry and Meghan to the coronation: “They are welcome”
There is no official announcement, but it seems that the Sussexes will also be at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023

A large part of British public opinion – and not only that – has panned both the series and the Sussexes, who, among other things, would have told a lot of lies on Netflix. But the American media has largely sided with the Dukes. For example in an editorial on the New York Times African-American writer Roxanne Gay justified the series Harry & Meghan as a understandable desire of the couple to give their version of the crisis which led her to decide to live in California. And she accused the British royal house of manipulating the national media against Meghan for fear that the popularity of the ex-Hollywood actress would overshadow that of Charles and William. The authoritative writer’s intervention was not an isolated case in America. Feminist activist and university lecturer Salamishah Tillet, always on New York Timeswrote: «I think that Meghan and Harry actually suffered from the royal family’s racism against her and for Britain’s racism against her. It’s something King Charles could deal with but he seems unable to do it.’

The Sussexes were not enough, there is another relative who continues to give the new sovereign headaches: his brother Andrew of York. As soon as Charles ascended the throne, Andrew – deprived of royal titles and military and obliged to withdraw from public life for his involvement in the Epstein scandal which cast the shadow of paedophilia on him – he allegedly ran to the new king and asked him to get his royal representation back. A hard face-to-face would have arisen, and the sovereign at a certain point would have yelled at his brother: «Andrew, it’s over. You’ll never go back to being a full-fledged royal. You can continue to have a good life, no matter what. But you’ll never get your public role back in the family againyou have to accept it.”

Andrew of York’s tears, when Charles told him: “You will never get your royal role back”
As revealed by the Mail on Sunday, shortly before the death of Elizabeth II between the two brothers there was “a hard face to face” on the fate of the Duke of York, who had been removed for years now, due to the Epstein scandal, from the public life of the royals. Here’s what we know

In the first four months of his reign Charles, who turned 74 last November, also had to face problems of a completely different kind. Like the unprecedented political chaos unleashed by the change of two prime ministers in a very short time: Liz Trussonly stayed in Downing Street for 45 days, e Rishi Sunak. Also in that period Carlo – the royal green ahead of everyone – had to collect the ban to participate in COP 27 which took place in Egypt. A choice imposed by Liz Truss that would have been dictated by questions of opportunity, in accordance with the «super partes» role of the king. But that – as explained by the correspondent from the BBC’s royal palace, Jonny Dymond – has greatly distressed Carlo.

In addition, during a couple of official engagements in the company of the queen consort Camillathe new ruler was contested with egg throwing (once by a 23-year-old who wanted to protest the Britain’s colonial past). Despite the many problems (family and otherwise) that The King had to face in the first four months of his reign, his popularity does not seem to be in danger. On the contrary. The new polls show that the sovereign has a 54% approval rating, up 11 percentage points compared to the previous March surveys. In fact, many Britons think that Charles will be “an excellent king, of stability and continuity”. A good reason – at least this – to toast with optimism to the new year on the throne of England.
