Chaos in Bangladesh: Hindus complain of attacks after PM Hasina flees

Hundreds of Hindu homes, businesses and temples were vandalized in Bangladesh after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled, according to a minority association, as India expressed concern over the incidents. Hindus make up 8% of Bangladesh’s population (about 170 million total) and have traditionally supported Hasina’s self-styled populist Awami League in opposition to the opposition, which includes a hard-line Islamist party. India, where Hasina is now hosted after she left yesterday after 15 years in power, said it was “deeply alarming that minorities, their businesses and their temples have been attacked in many locations. According to the Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC), 200-300 mostly Hindu homes and businesses have been vandalized since Monday and 15-20 Hindu temples have been damaged.
