Chaos and violence in Haiti: Gangsters attacked the National Library

Armed gangs, which already control much of Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, attacked the National Library today, its director said, in a new sign of escalating violence in the impoverished Caribbean nation. “I was told that the gangsters are stealing the furniture of the institution. They also grabbed the building's generator. I informed the police and asked for their swift intervention,” Dangelo Near told AFP. “We have rare documents, over 200 years old, that are important to our heritage and are in danger of being burned or destroyed by robbers,” added the director of the foundation. In the previous days there was relative calm in the city, but on Monday the gangs resumed their attacks in many districts of the capital.
