The developers of the Chainlink network of decentralized oracles have added support for weather data from Google Cloud Bigquery.
According to a blog post, companies have been working on Chainlink support for Google Cloud data since 2019. Chainlink oracles feed data from Google Cloud Bigquery, which stores weather data from the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other sources.
“Weather data is important because it powers decentralized insurance applications, some of which are weather dependent,” said Chainlink co-founder Sergei Nazarov.
As part of Google’s integration with Chainlink, an oracle node is used that continuously sends data from the outside world to the Chainlink network, where it is combined and made available in an aggregated form for blockchain applications. Google spokesman Allen Day said:
“Unexpected adverse weather events are causing economic losses in many industries, a problem that is becoming more prevalent as we face climate change.”
As a reminder, Chainlink developers have recently announced Chainlink Keepers, decentralized off-grid computing tools, as well as risk monitoring gateways to protect against fraud.
