Census agents collect information on Brazilian urban infrastructure

Until July 12, 22,745 census agents will collect information on the urban map of the 5,570 Brazilian municipalities. The survey, which is part of the preparation for the 2022 Demographic Census, consists of identifying streets, avenues and urban equipment, such as bus stops, street lighting, bike paths, among others.

The data collected will serve as a basis for the development of public policies, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). At this stage, no interviews will be carried out, only the collection of information by observation.

In Rio de Janeiro, there are 1,530 supervisory census agents and 287 municipal census agents, who will cover all urban sectors in all municipalities in Rio de Janeiro. Gabriel Teixeira Barros, coordinator of the Census in Rio, explains that the data collected in the Urban Survey of the Surroundings of Households, as it is called, could be used by public managers over the next decade.

“We are going to go through all the urban sectors classified by the IBGE in the state of Rio de Janeiro. So, this includes cities in the interior, slums, risk areas. So, this information will be made available to all mayors and public managers to prepare their public policies for the next decade”, explains the coordinator.

The Surroundings Survey was carried out for the first time in the 2010 Census. Since then, some methodological adaptations have been made, such as the inclusion of questions related to the environment, accessibility and circulation capacity.

This year, IBGE will apply a new methodology to identify the route in areas of difficult access and without GPS signal.

“This will allow the census agent to recognize the sector in which he will work and update necessary information about public places. In addition, the collection of information on the surroundings of the households will be able to be associated with the Demographic Census in order to show the population’s quality of life”, says Laura Cardoso, census analyst at the IBGE.

Interviews for the 2022 Census are expected to begin on August 1st. IBGE is still awaiting the decision of a judicial appeal on the inclusion of questions on sexual orientation and gender identity in the questionnaire.
