Carrefour to freeze prices of 100 products in France to fight inflation

French supermarket retailer Carrefour on Monday announced a price freeze on 100 everyday products, from canned sardines to rice and dishwashing detergent. The network thus joins with companies struggling to help consumers deal with rising inflation.

The measures follow pressure from President Emmanuel Macron’s government for companies to do more to contain rising prices.

Faced with the prospect of a supertax on its record profits, French oil company TotalEnergies and shipping giant CMA CGM took further steps in July to cut prices.

TotalEnergies said it would cut fuel prices at its gas stations across France from Sept. imports from Asia to France.

Carrefour said it would freeze prices until November 30 on a variety of products, from food to health products and clothing.

In the face of rising inflation, other retailers are also targeting consumers’ concerns about the cost of living with their own promotional campaigns.

In May, French supermarket group Leclerc froze prices on the 120 most bought products until July, while in April British supermarket operators Asda and Morrisons said they would lower prices on essential items.

Data published this month showed French inflation rose to 6.8% in July, the highest rate since France started using European Union methodology to calculate data in the early 1990s, though lower than most. other EU countries thanks to government limits on energy and gas prices.

Inflation surged across the world following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which pushed up energy prices, adding to previously existing price pressures from tight supply chains following the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
