Actress Carolina Dieckmann, 46, spoke openly about the fight of her late mother, Maíra Dieckmann, against alcoholism. The star reported using moments from her childhood to build her character in the movie “(Des) Control”, by filmmaker Rosane Svartman.
“Alcoholism, for me, was already a very inside subject. My mother… had a time… When she separated from my father, my house took fire, a lot of things happened… they separated, and my mother was drinking 10 years old, and we understand that, perhaps, she was an alcoholic, she used it,” she said during participation in the conversation.
The artist’s mother, who died in 2019, after a sudden illness, never sought professional help or attended support groups. “She lying in a very sad, fragile bed. One fine day she got up, said she was going to stop drinking and smoking and never again. Without going to anything. We understood, then, that perhaps she was not alcoholic, because then she drank again socially. So she really chose if anesthetized through alcohol and spent 10 years in a hole,” he continued.
Carolina said she believed her experience in the feature helped her resignify part of what she lived. “I have a vision of what alcohol does in a very intimate place. I am 10, 11 years old, being discovering my wife and seeing that woman, who was my super woman, lying in a bed, suffering for love, unable to get up. I had it to give to the character. I’m a child who was already in the back seat and my mother hit the car.
“I had moments on the set when I went out and said, ‘Heck, mother, I’m healing here. I’m understanding a stop I couldn’t understand younger.’
In the drama, the actress plays the former recovery alcoholic Kátia Klein, an author in creative crisis who finds herself suffocated by the demands of motherhood and the aging of her parents. Kátia believes she can drink socially again, but ends up dominated by addiction after 15 years of sobriety.
