Carola Rackete: The prosecution against the German master of Sea-Watch 3 is on file

An Italian court has filed a lawsuit against German captain Carola Rakete, the ship Sea-Watch 3, who participated in search and rescue operations for refugees and migrants in the Mediterranean.

The court acquitted Rakete of the charges of disobedience and resistance against the authority, following the suggestion of the prosecutor, who asked for the prosecution against her to be terminated.

Carola Rackete, then master of the Sea-Watch 3, entered the port of the small Italian island Lampedusa in June 2019, in order to disembark 40 refugees and immigrants who had been rescued by his crew, although he had not received the permit, as reminded by AMPE.

The case comes amid a bitter dispute between then-far-right Lega party leader Matteo Salvini and then-interior ministers, as well as non-governmental organizations involved in search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean.

Rakete had explained that she decided to enter the port because the tension was peaking on the ship, which was at sea for days, as Italy had then closed its ports to NGO ships. Along the way, a financial police boat came into contact.

After the incident, was temporarily detained.

In the reasoning of his decision according to which the case was entered in the file, the judge noted that Rakete had to enter the port and that she fulfilled her duty, therefore her actions could not be described as resistance to the principle – government ship -, according to the Adnkronos news agency.

The Supreme Court of Italy had also ruled in favor of Rakete in January 2020, however prosecutors had appealed against the decision to release him, which was rejected.
